SEO vs. GEO: the key differences
SEO ranks links, GEO selects cited passages. Two different logics, two different metrics, but a common foundation you shouldn't abandon.
SEO tries to get a link to appear as high as possible in a list of results. GEO tries to get a piece of content selected as the source of a generated answer. These two goals look similar on the surface, but rest on different mechanisms, with different success metrics. Understanding precisely where they overlap and where they diverge helps you avoid misdirecting your efforts. This distinction isn't just a theoretical exercise: it has direct consequences for how you prioritize the time spent producing, revising, and structuring content.
Two different units of selection: the link vs. the passage
Classic search ranking evaluates and ranks whole pages against each other, in an ordered list of results. The user then decides which link to click. GEO, on the other hand, operates at the passage level: a RAG system retrieves and evaluates fragments of content, not whole pages, and it's the system, not the user, that decides which passages get incorporated into the final answer. A page can therefore be invisible in Google's top ten and still provide the passage cited in a ChatGPT answer, or the reverse. This difference in unit also explains why the same page can have an excellent SEO score thanks to generally solid content, while containing, at its core, no passage precise or self-contained enough to be picked out on its own by a reranking system.
Two different success metrics: the click vs. the citation
In SEO, the reference metric remains the click: a user sees a link, decides to click, lands on the site. The whole classic measurement chain, from click-through rate to conversion rate, rests on that actual visit. In GEO, the metric changes in nature: what matters is being cited or mentioned in an answer, whether or not the user then clicks a link. Many AI answers generate no click at all to the source site, which doesn't mean they have no value: being named as a reference in an answer affects brand perception, even without an immediate visit. What remains common to both disciplines
Despite these differences, SEO and GEO share a foundation of fundamentals that would be a mistake to pit against each other. Clear, well-structured content that genuinely answers a question and rests on verifiable evidence remains an advantage under both logics. A site that's technically accessible to crawlers, fast, and properly marked up is also a necessary condition in both cases: without technical accessibility, neither SEO nor GEO can work. Likewise, how fresh a piece of content is, how regularly it's updated, and how consistent the information it presents is from page to page remain useful criteria under both logics, even if their relative weight isn't necessarily identical. Where the two logics diverge the most
The clearest divergence concerns the unit of optimization: classic SEO still largely thinks in terms of keywords and target pages, whereas GEO thinks in terms of topical coverage and self-contained passages, a principle covered in the lesson Fan-out queries: the key concept. Another important divergence: the weight of a brand's external reputation. In SEO, inbound links (backlinks) play a fairly well-documented authority role. In GEO, what seems to matter more is how often a brand is mentioned, cited, or recommended elsewhere across the web, even without a hyperlink — a factor covered in the lesson Brand mentions: the number-one factor in AI visibility. A third, more subtle divergence concerns the stability of results: an SEO position generally shifts gradually from one week to the next, whereas a GEO citation can appear or disappear between two answers to a nearly identical question, which makes tracking AI visibility more demanding in terms of measurement frequency than classic SEO tracking.
A question of priority, not exclusivity
It would be a mistake to treat GEO as a replacement for SEO, or vice versa. The two channels coexist, as seen in the lesson The search landscape in 2026, and many efforts benefit both at once. The real question isn't "SEO or GEO," but "how much of my attention should go to each channel," based on how your users actually search for information today. For a small team with limited resources, that can mean prioritizing the fundamentals shared by both disciplines first, such as clarity and technical accessibility, before investing in optimizations more specific to one channel or the other. Conversely, a team that already has substantial editorial resources can afford to handle both channels in parallel, simply adapting its production process rather than duplicating it.
Keep in mind that SEO and GEO aren't two competing disciplines but two selection logics that coexist, with partly different units, metrics, and levers, resting on a largely shared foundation of content quality. In both cases, neglecting this shared foundation in favor of optimizations too specific to a single channel remains the most common trap. Treating the two as complementary lenses on the same underlying content, rather than as rival checklists, tends to produce better results than optimizing for either one in isolation.
